Plans have been approved for a 157,500 sq ft office building that is a key part of the proposed £300m Civic and Cultural Quarter in Doncaster.

Yesterday, Doncaster Council’s planning committee gave the green light for the five storey building, which is expected to accommodate around 1,400 council staff.

The building includes a council chamber that will overlook the new civic square. It has a customer service centre on the ground floor designed to let residents interact with the council and other public sector partners in one location, rather than having multiple ‘front office’ buildings.

Construction of the building is expected to start by the end of the year and take two years to complete, so it is open for business in early 2013.

The development is being kickstarted with funding from the Yorkshire and Humber European Regional Development Fund.

Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies said: “In bringing all town centre council services into one modern office complex, residents will no longer have to wander between different locations to make inquiries or complete applications.

“Virtually everything residents want to know or do will be under one roof and this will enable the council to deliver the first class service they deserve.”

Councillor Jonathan Wood, Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration, said: “Planning consent for the new civic offices is tremendous news. The new offices will play an important role in the success of Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter by drawing people into the area.”

The new office forms part of the first phase of the Civic and Cultural Quarter project, which is being developed by contractor Muse developments.

It aims to deliver a new public square and new performance venue, for which a new planning application is expected to be submitted in the coming months.
