Government hails help for 58 college schemes
The government’s Building Colleges for the Future programme helped 51 colleges in England during 2009, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has announced.
Today, further education minister Kevin Brennan said there were 58 new building and construction projects completed in 2009 at 51 colleges across England. These include Westminster Kingsway College that received £26.7m towards the redevelopment of its Kings Cross site.
Other projects included South Thames College, which received £28.1m towards the redevelopment of its Wandsworth High Street Campus, and St Helen’s College, which received £21.8m for the refurbishment of its Brook Street buildings.
A further 42 new college buildings are expected to be completed in 2010. Brennan said: “New college facilities improve the lives of learners, regenerate communities and inspire local people to learn and develop. New facilities like these give people the skills they need to get into work and in turn contribute to the growth of the economy,” he said.
