Labour manifesto pledges tough action on property
The Labour Party had said it would take tough action on reducing the cost of running its property if it won a fourth term at the general election on 6 May.
This morning, the party launched its manifesto which included a pledge to be “relentless in making sure that the public gets value for money for every pound spent”. It said this would include an overhaul of how government works, including cutting back office and property running costs.
It also said it would abolish unnecessary arm’s length bodies and sharply reduce spending on consultancy and marketing. It said these steps would help it meet its Budget pledge last month to achieve efficiency savings of £20bn a year by 2012-13.
These policies reiterate policy plans the party outlined at last month’s Budget and the pre-Budget report in December 2009.
The party said it had identified the following savings:
- £15bn efficiency savings in 2010-11 with a further £11bn savings by 2012-13
- £3.4bn a year savings with new controls on public sector pay, including a 1% cap on basic pay uplifts for 2010-11 and 2012-13
- £20bn asset sales by 2020
