Tories to axe 750 school projects, says Labour
The Labour Party has published a list of 750 schools it says would miss out on refurbishment if the Conservatives took power.
Schools in 90 local authorities which are negotiating capital funds under the government’s £45bn Building Schools for the Future programme could lose out under the Tories, according to Labour.
A further fifty further councils are on the waiting list for the programme but have not yet begun tendering.
Conservative shadow education minister Nick Gibb has previously warned that schools which haven’t yet reached financial close on projects could be axed by the Conservatives.
The Tories want to introduce new funding mechanisms for major projects to replace the current PFI model, which they say is wasteful.
Ed Balls said yesterday: “This revelation means hundreds of new school buildings right across the country face the axe if the Tories win the election. It’s particularly shocking that even building projects which are already a long way down the track could be cancelled by the Conservatives in just a matter of weeks.”
A Tory spokesperson said: Labour are being hugely hypocritical in accusing us of wanting to spend less on capital projects in future years
In February, Gibb said: “We think [Building Schools for the Future] is a hugely wasteful approach to procuring new buildings. It’s very top down, very bureaucratic and costs a huge amount of money.”
“What we’re saying is if financial close has been reached, it will go ahead.” If not, “then it won’t be guaranteed.”
