Grant Shapps appointed housing minister
13/05/10 5:00 pm By Richard Heap
Conservative MP Grant Shapps has been named new housing minister by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government.
The move is a step up for Shapps who was formerly the Conservative Party’s shadow housing minister. Shapps stood unsuccessfully for Parliament in 1997 and 2001, and won the Welwyn Hatfield in the House of Commons at the 2005 election.
He defended the seat successfully at the 2010 election, held on 6 May. However, as housing minister, he will not have a seat in cabinet in the new coalition government.
His work in the Department for Communities and Local Government will involve abolishing home information packs (HIPs).

This guy is a disaster. Superficial, supercilious, and makes a virtue of ignorance. Knows nothing about housing except the private sector and owner-occupation. Can’t be bothered with the complexities of public sector housing. I was desperately hoping Cameron would have seen through him and not given him this job, which he made a right hash of shadowing. Those hopes were increased when the coalition was agreed. Several Lib Dems would have been much better. Best of all would have been Susan Kramer, but she lost her seat.
Mr Shapps has made me realize just how little it is possible for a minister to know about his own department.

I think we have to give Mr Shapps a chance to show us whether he is up to the job or not. Then we can decide how we stand in relation to him.All I can say is that I wish him well in his new job providing he always is consistent in his hat sizes.
well lets see what he is going to do about council housing.
Due to a marriage breakdown…i have had to leave my family home and now live rough….I have a child that wants to move with me he cant doue to the circumstances so he is jumping from friend to friend on a nightly basis.
My local council (LBBD) have said I have no chance and should rent private…yeah great idea…wheres that money coming from????
this housing minister needs to get more single people off the street and into homes.
The minister of housing should take a look into how london & Quadrant housing officer Laura Cravitz only looks at one side of the story and not the bigger picture when she is evicting tenants.
A housing association should listern to both sides and support all tenants of their association and other associations and appoint a housing officer for each side of a disagreemnet between neighbours.
The truth should be clear if they did there jobs properly.

Thanks for getting in touch, Sylvia. We are getting a number of comments about council housing, so I am planning to start another conversation on the topic elsewhere on the site. Keep an eye out for that. Thanks, Rich
