Boris launches Siemens scheme in east London
Phone company Siemens is to invest £30m in a conference and exhibition centre to be at the heart of a new “green district” of East London.
London mayor Boris Johnson, Siemens chief executive Andreas J. Goss and Newham Borough Council mayor Sir Robin Wales announced the plan for Siemens to invest £30m in the Siemens Pavilion building, which is set to be built and operational by early 2012.
The building is due to include a conference and exhibition centre, as well as a 300-seat auditorium and facilities for educational tour groups. It is set to be built on land owned by the London Development Agency and Newham Borough Council.
The Siemens Pavilion will be part of a “green enterprise district” in east London, which will redevelop industrial land to attract new development, develop low carbon skills, and create up to 6,000 new jobs.
London mayor Johnson said: “A century ago, we were cashing in on carbon, yet now there are clear economic opportunities coming from getting rid of it. I want London to be ahead of the queue, grasping a significant share of the jobs and economic booty arising from the new generation of law carbon goods and services.”
Sir Robin Wales, mayor of Newham said: “London is moving east and there is huge potential here for investment, growth and greater prosperity. I am delighted a huge blue chip organisation such as Siemens has recognised this.”
