Pickles to call time on RDAs this week

The government is to announce the end of regional development agencies this week, with a view to saving the government £2.3bn a year.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles is expected to formalise his plan to scrap RDAs later this week ahead of the emergency Budget next Tuesday.

The plan is to bring an end to RDAs, which were set up in 1999, with primary legislation to be introduced in March 2012.

The RDAs  have already experienced short-term cuts of £270m to their capital spending programmes, meaning projects across the country are being informed over the coming weeks of how developments will be affected by cuts.

In the longer term, the coalition wants to introduce bodies called Local Enterprise Partnerships – the joining up of councils and businesses at a local level to drive economic growth and regeneration.
