Glasgow grants £1m for Egyption Halls revamp
Glasgow City Council has committed £1m towards the proposed refurbishment of the city centre’s Egyptian Halls building.
The council’s executive committee has approved the contribution of up to £1m from its Better Glasgow Fund to revamp the grade A listed building on Union Street, most of which has remained vacant for 30 years.
The £36.5m fund was launched in 2008 to support capital projects that encourage private sector development while meeting the regeneration aims of the city.
Steve Inch, executive director of development and regeneration services at Glasgow City Council, said: “The council has been anxious to see this important Grade A listed building that takes up a prime position in Union Street, be restored and returned to productive use for many years and has used various planning powers to help bring it into a single ownership.
“With development plans progressing we hope that our proposed financial support will bolster our commitment to this project and the regeneration of Union Street, in general.”
