Wandsworth local plan gets Inspector’s go-ahead

A government inspector has given the all-clear to a central plank of Wandsworth council’s new planning framework which will guide development in the borough during the next 15 years.

The core strategy is the key document in the council’s Local Development Framework (LDF). The planning inspectorate has now confirmed that the strategy is sound and can go ahead with a number of amendments.

Most of the changes had been proposed by the council at the public hearings in February 2010.

The inspector, Linda Wride, had raised issues around policies on tall buildings and affordable housing. Both were approved with only minor changes to the wording.

Her report accepts that the information provided by the council formed a suitable evidence base for the policies.

She confirmed that while guidance on tall buildings published by CABE and English Heritage is relevant there are other ways of providing appropriate supporting information.

The inspector also accepted the findings of the council’s viability statement for affordable housing.

Last week, we revealed that CB Richard Ellis planner Nick Cuff is leaving the firm to become chairman of the planning committee at Wandsworth.

Executive member for strategic planning Ravi Govindia said: “The planning team have worked hard in meeting the very exacting demands set by the LDF process and so to have this approval is a vote of confidence for them. We now have a clear and workable vision for Wandsworth which I am sure will stand the test of time.”

The council will now prepare detailed planning policies to support the core strategy including a document setting out specific uses for key sites and another clarifying the criteria by which the council will consider applications.

Public consultation on this stage begins in October.

The core strategy itself is expected to be adopted by the council at its meeting on October 20, 2010.
