Stoke regeneration body to be replaced by LEP
Stoke Council’s regeneration partnership is set to be wound up after councillors voted to replace it with a local enterprise partnership (LEP).
At a meeting of Stoke Council, councillors agreed that the investment and regeneration powers of the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership should be given to the council’s executive team in the short-term, pending the creation of an LEP.
They said these powers were needed in order to apply to create the LEP, which would take over the funding role of regional development agency Advantage West Midlands when it is scrapped.
The council wants to form the LEP alongside other councils in Staffordshire. At the council meeting last week, it said the new body would offer more funding opportunities in future. Councils have until 6 September to submit outline proposals for the LEPs.
Tom Macartney, director of regeneration at the city council and managing director of the partnership, will leave the council in September.
Hardial Bhogal, the chief operating officer of the partnership, will take temporary control of the regeneration department.
Mohammed Pervez, leader of Stoke Council, said: “There are currently a lot of Government changes underway which is affecting the governance of these schemes but importantly has not and will not affect the delivery.
“We are currently looking to pursue an LEP for Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire and are working with partners on how this will take shape.
“By forming an LEP rather than continuing with the current partnership it will provide the area with more opportunities for future funding.”
