Notts council to cut 3,000 workers
Nottinghamshire County Council expects to axe 3,000 staff in the next three years.
The council announced today that new budget constraints would lead to mass redundancies, adding to the £36m cut disclosed in its 2011-12 budget report in February.
It said the necessary savings had almost doubled to £69m, due to reduced central government grants, inflation, and other factors.
The council now needs to find around £150m of savings by 2013-14, which it said would have an “inevitable impact on post reductions.”
Despite having already declared 483 posts at risk, it is now expecting to cut the council’s head count by a further 2,500.
Councillor Kay Cutts, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “The financial challenges facing the Council are unprecedented and a fundamental, once in a generation redesign of the council is required in order to meet the challenges we face.
“The council provides a vast array of services, many of which are heavily subsidised. We hope that the residents will understand that in some cases services will change, or they could be asked to pay more towards their cost or may have to travel further to access them.
“We will protect services as much as we can but we will simply not be able to afford to run things as we do today. Unfortunately, some of the ‘nice to have’ services we may not be able to continue.
“We will provide better value for money by reducing bureaucracy and stripping out layers of managers and administration which will mean the people who are responsible for delivering services will be closer to the people receiving those services.”
The council has introduced a freeze on non-essential spending and is minimising its spending on consultants and temporary staff.
All non-frontline temporary staff will leave by 1 October unless agreed by senior officers as absolutely essential.
