RDAs cut 424 workers in five months
England’s regional development agencies have lost 424 staff in total since the general election in May, Public Property UK can reveal.
The bodies, which are due to be abolished by April 2012 and employ around 2,500 staff, have recently finished a first wave of voluntary redundancies and are set to cut a larger swathe of workers starting next month.
Of the nine RDAs, the South West and North West Development Agencies and Yorkshire Forward have lost most staff, cutting 76, 93, and 93 workers respectively.
The South East Development Agency has lost the least number of staff, axing 10 works since the coalition took over.
The London Development Agency, which faces an uncertain future after its 2011-12 budget was unexpectedly cut last week, has lost 34 staff.
Later today, the government will publish its white paper on sub-national growth, outlining its strategy for how to stimulate regional economies following last week’s cuts to public spending.
It will spell out what regeneration and planning powers local enterprise partnerships, the successor bodies to RDAs, are likely to be given.
